Salt River First Nation re-elects Chief Toni Heron

The results for the Salt River First Nation General election have been tallied.

For the position of Chief, the race went to Toni Heron, who received a total of 185 votes, and won another term in office.

Challenger Frieda Martselos, the former MLA for the Thebacha region and a former chief, received 136 votes.

The six Councilor positions have been claimed by Brittany  Bourke with 187 votes, Delores Bruno-Taylor with 177 votes, Henry Beaver with 175 votes, Carmen Wanderspirit with 158 votes, Archie Beaulieu with 155 votes, and Levi MacDonald, who received 150 votes.

The SRFN is comprised of two distinct Chipewyan groups, those being the Dedharesche, who mainly live above the 60th parallel in the Northwest Territories, and the Thebatthie, who primarily live below the 60th in Alberta.

The last elections for Chief and Council were held on September 19th 2022. The SRFN holds these elections every three years.
