Yellowknife's Rebecca Alty one of Maclean's magazine's 40 young Canadian powerhouses
Rebecca Alty’s political career and personal profile have hit new highs, with the Yellowknifer being included in Maclean’s magazine’s 40 young Canadian powerhouses.
Alty is included in the Power Brokers group, “The big personalities putting Canada first on the world stage — both in and out of the Prime Minister’s Office”
States the publication: “A new generation of leaders are redefining Canada: thinkers, artists, politicos and entrepreneurs forging a stronger, more resilient country. Here, in collaboration with our sister publication Canadian Business, we present 40 young powerhouses who are building new institutions and shaking up the old ones.”
Maclean’s notes Alty is the youngest member of Mark Carney’s cabinet — and the first federal minister from the Northwest Territories in nearly two decades.

It continues: “A lifelong Yellowknifer and former mayor of the capital, Alty now holds the weighty Crown-Indigenous relations file, where she’s pushing to accelerate stalled land-claim and self-government negotiations.
“Alty is urging the federal government to expand its team of negotiators and meet more frequently. By pushing for more consistent talks, she aims to empower Indigenous communities with greater control over their land, language and governance.
“Before winning a seat as MP in 2025, she spent over a decade in municipal politics, passing zoning reforms to ease the North’s housing crisis and championing transitional housing for people struggling with addiction.”
On election night, April 29th, Alty was selected to replace Liberal Michael McLeod as the the NWT’s sole MP in the House of Commons.
Said Alty: “I just want to say a big ‘thank you’ to the people across the Northwest Territories who’ve placed their trust in me. I promise to work hard to represent you and to be your strong voice in Ottawa.”
There was a lot of talk in the room as to whether Alty’s strong political background would make her a candidate for Carney’s cabinet.
