One person killed, another seriously injured and driver charged

The canine unit tracked down the driver, who ran away from crash site and now faces a list of alleged crimes, says RCMP

One passenger was seriously injured, while another passed away at the scene of a Sunday night traffic accident near Behchokǫ̀ .

The driver had run off and had to be tracked by an RCMP canine unit and she now faces a host of charges, as she also recovers from injuries, say police.

On September 21st at 11:45 pm, officers received a call of a person sitting on the access road near the community landfill, reads a release.

Officers attended the location and discovered a vehicle in the ditch.

A seriously injured person and a deceased person were located outside the vehicle.

Both were determined to have been passengers in the vehicle.

Emergency medical services were immediately requested, as well as support from G-Division Police Dog Services to locate the driver.

First aid was provided to the injured passenger until paramedics arrived.

The passenger was later flown out of the NWT for further treatment due to the severity of the injuries.

A couple of hours after the crash, shortly after 1 am on September 22nd, Police Dog Services located and detained the suspected driver.

She was transported to hospital in police custody for treatment of her own injuries.

As a result of an investigation, 33-year-old Leona Apples has been charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
  • Failure to stop after an accident resulting in death.
  • Failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.

She appeared in court and was remanded into custody.

The investigation remains open.
