One man arrested after drug smuggling attempt
The 19-year-old suspect tried to smuggle a package into the North Slave Correctional Complex
A man is set to appear in court later today after he was arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the North Slave Correctional Complex.
The smuggling attempt was reported to the polices on August 27th, when they were told that someone had stashed a package of illegal drugs somewhere on the premises. Correctional officers were able to find the package before it was discovered by an inmate.
An investigation was quickly launched in order to find the one responsible for planting the package.
On September 5th, investigators were able to locate the suspect vehicle in downtown Yellowknife. A traffic stop was conducted, but the suspect fled the scene. Officers decided not to pursue in the interest of keeping the public safe.
The vehicle was soon discovered in a wooded area and the suspect was arrested. Also found in the vehicle was around 106 grams of crack-cocaine, multiple grams of what is believed to be hydromorphone (Dilaudid), and more than $1,600 in cash. A female passenger was also in the vehicle, but she has since been released with no charges.
The main suspect, 19-year-old Alen Vogel of Yellowknife, has been charged with:
- Two counts of Conspiring to Commit an Indictable Offence
- Two counts of Attempting to Commit an Indictable Offence
- Flight from a Peace Officer
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of Trafficking, and
- Resisting a Peace Officer
Vogel was the subject of a conditional sentence order when he was arrested. He has already made one appearance in court, and is making another appearance sometime today.
