It was Oct. 9, 1984, when a Twin Otter hit a telecommunication pole outside the community of Délı̨nę.
This Saturday marks 37 years since the crash. Every year since, the community has come together to honour the family members and victims lost on that day.
A memorial will take place at the monument site at 3 p.m. in the middle of town.
Leeroy Andre is the chief of the community and he treats this day as a day of reflection.
“(It) was pretty devastating to the community,” he says, “we knew everybody.”
“I think it’s important to Déline to make sure that we remember the people that have passed on and that we pay our respects.”
The community remembers Irene Baton, Brian Dillon, Fredrick Neyelle, Tony Menacho, Doris Vital, Beatrice Tutcho.
All 6 passengers, including the pilot, passed away that day. What was understood to be from foggy weather conditions and high levels of stress from the pilot, reads an aviation report.
