Five communities now eligible for Nutrition North subsidy during break-up, freeze-up

The communities of Nahanni Butte, Tsiigehtchic, Fort McPherson, Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk have been added to Nutrition North’s retail subsidy — but only for a specific time.

“Outside of seasonal isolation periods, food is shipped into these five communities by truck or sealift; however, during break-up and freeze-up each year, food must be flown in, which increases costs significantly,” reads a federal government news release.

Products eligible under the subsidy range from perishable foods to essential items like diapers, certain non-prescription drugs, soap and hand sanitizer among others.

The subsidy goes towards registered retailers and suppliers.
