The Tłı̨chǫ Government received $3.9 million from the Government of Canada to build 18 affordable housing units in its territory.

The units are split as follows among the four Tłı̨chǫ communities:

  • Seven homes in Behchokǫ̀, three are two-bedroom duplexes and one is a three-bedroom single unit
  • Five homes in Whatì, four are two-bedroom duplexes and one is a three-bedroom single unit
  • Four homes in Gamètì, and these are all two-bedroom duplexes
  • Two homes in Wekweètì, and these are two-bedroom duplexes

The units are modular homes and were moved to the communities last winter via winter road.

“The Tłı̨chǫ Government is committed to working with our partners to help find solutions to the severe housing crisis in our region and this investment is good news for our communities,” said Grand Chief George Mackenzie during an announcement Monday with MP Michael McLeod.

Most units have already been allocated to families in need and are expected to be complete by next spring.

The money was allocated though the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Rapid Housing Initiative; it is separate from the $60-million carve out that is going to build 126 units across the NWT.
