Residents in Jean Marie River (Tthek’éhdélį) and sections of Fort Simpson (Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́) remain without power due to flooding in the communities.

“NTPC is not currently providing any power in Jean Marie River to keep people safe while floodwaters are present in the community,” wrote Doug Prendergast, NTPC spokesperson, in an email. “There has also been damage to the power plant that will need to be repaired.”

Prendergast said there is a generator on standby for when public safety officials give NTPC the go-ahead to restore power.

That may take a while as he said all buildings will have to be evaluated by the Department of Infrastructure before being reconnected.

He added that NTPC has a meeting today with an electrical inspector in the community to begin that work.

Reduced power in Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́

“NTPC continues to provide power to buildings located on high ground in Fort Simpson but has asked those remaining in the community to reduce their electricity consumption,” says Prendergast.

He added there is “no significant damage” to the power plant, but wires and poles have been affected.
