The community of Behchokǫ̀ has decided to temporarily ban alcohol within its borders.

The ban started on Saturday, May 9 and will last until May 18.

In a public notice posted to its Facebook page, the community says the ban comes after “public safety concerns caused by a significant increase in alcohol abuse and related unlawful activity.”

During the ban, no residents can buy, consume or transport alcohol within 25 kilometres of the Kó Gocho Centre. That includes all of Rae, Edzo and Frank Channel.

A few residents commented on the social post saying they agree with the community’s decision. Others believe it should be longer.

CKLB has reached out to Chief Clifford Daniels with questions about enforcement and penalties if residents are caught with alcohol during the ban.

We will update once that information becomes available.
