Youth voting initiative announced in NWT

Young voters and those who will soon be eligible to vote are the target of an initiative announced by Elections NWT.

The agency, along with support from the territorial government’s Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), has announced a music contest and workshop to be led by one of the top hip-hop artists in the NWT – Aaron “Godson” Hernandez.

According to a news release from the territory’s Chief Electoral Officer Nicole Latour, youth are under represented at the polls in the Northwest Territories.

She states that this initiative provides a means for young people to understand the importance of making a choice and  having a voice in the North’s elections.

The contest is open to people age 16 to 24.

Contest posters and information items have been sent to all high schools and youth centres throughout the NWT.
