Careless smoking was the cause of a fatal fire last Saturday in Yellowknife.

NWT Fire Marshal Chucker Dewar says smoking materials were placed too close to combustible materials in the apartment unit on 46th Street.

He has not said what the combustible materials were.

The coroner’s office has released the name of the victim.

She has been identified as 55-year-old Karen Petersen.

The woman was pronounced dead at Stanton Territorial Hospital – she may have died from smoke inhalation – there was not a great deal of fire damage.

The official cause of death has not been released.

Another tenant was treated for minor injuries at Stanton.

It is not clear whether other tenants of the apartment building, which was damaged by smoke and water – have been allowed to return home.
