Man in custody after gun incident in Wekweeti

A man was taken into custody after RCMP responded to a gun call last week in Wekweeti.

According to a news release from the Mounties, officers responded last Wednesday night after a report of a 23-year-old man, armed with a gun.

Police say there were concerns that the man could cause harm in the community.

RCMP mobilized and flew to Wekweeti that night bringing with them a police dog.

Mounties located the man however police say he then fled the scene.

RCMP seized a loaded shotgun where the man was last seen but due to darkness called off the search for the man.

Officers staked out the residence overnight where the man was last seen and resumed the search the next morning.

At about 8:00 that night, acting on a tip, a vehicle was stopped and the unarmed man was taken into custody without incident.

The man, whom police have not identified, was flown to Yellowknife.

Mounties say he has not yet been charged at this time.
