Man charged after gun incident in Wekweeti

RCMP have charged a Wekweeti man with numerous firearms offences after an incident last week in the Tlicho community.

According to a news release, Mounties had to fly with their police dog into Wekweeti last Wednesday night after reports of a man armed with a gun and concerns he was going to bring harm to the community.

Police located the suspect but he fled from the scene before they could arrest him.

They called off the search for the man due to darkness.

Mounties were able to seize a loaded shotgun but were unable to take the man into custody until the next evening.

He was arrested in a vehicle without incident after police acted upon a tip.

No injuries were reported.

It is not clear if any shots were ever fired.

Bruno Simpson, 23, is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm. unauthorized possession of a firearm and disobeying a court order.

It is also not clear if Simpson remains in custody awaiting a court appearance or if he’s already been released on a promise to appear in court.
