King murder trial begins Monday

The long-awaited murder trial for Denecho King is set to get underway Monday morning in Supreme Court in Yellowknife.

The 25-year-old is charged with killing John Wifladt in Yellowknife in late 2014.

He is also charged with the attempted murder of Colin Digness who survived the same attack.

King has chosen to be tried by a judge alone – with no jury.

Security is expected to be tight – a rarely used metal detector is already set up outside the courtroom door.

King made news in 2016 when he scaled the roof of the North Slave Correctional Centre and made a daring daylight escape.

He was arrested about three days later – blocks away from the jail – at his mother’s house.
