Hay River’s recreation centre opens on-time for AWG

Hay River’s Don Stewart Recreation Center is open for business once again in time for the Arctic Winter Games.

After a long wait with many delays, athletes who will be using the rink seem to be impressed with the results.

Hay River’s Recreation Programmer Dale Loutit says even though she hasn’t gotten to get on the ice either, she is happy with how it seems to have turned out.

“It looks beautiful, brand new and amazing. I can’t wait to get in there and have programs running.”

The rink was open for a community tour early this week but the ice surface will remain untouched until next week’s winter games before being reopened to regular programming.

The renovations to the rink include a larger ice surface, a walking track, more locker storage space, new bleachers and a multipurpose room.

The 21 million dollar project has been underway for much of the last two years.
