Beck captures 11th Canadian Championship

Richard Beck is adding another Bowie knife to his collection.

He captured his 11th champion title at the 64th Dominion Diamond Canadian Championship Dog Derby, Sunday on Yellowknife Bay.

His brother Danny Beck was on his heels… coming in at a close second place finish.

“I had all girls, no one wanted them, and tied them onto my sleigh. And you don’t huge dogs, these gals pulled me on the trail no problem,” Beck told the crowd gathered at the Explorer Hotel on Sunday evening for the musher’s banquet.

Rookie of the year Cai Reid had a strong third place finish.

Deh Gah Mushing Club’s Danny Beaulieu finished fourth.

Last year’s champ, Jaden Beck came in sixth with some new dogs on the line. Finishing ahead of him was Alaskan musher Jeffrey Conn.

Annie Malo from Quebec came in 7th, and Oregon Musher Rachel Scdoris dog team was unable to complete the race. Scdoris says she and her family and dogs will be back to compete next year.

Mushers are now resting their dogs and preparing for next weekend’s Memorial Race in Fort Resolution.
