Barging schedule could be available by April

Nunakput MLA Herb Nakimayak had questions about the GNWT’s Marine re-supply contracts on Monday.

“When will the barging schedule be drafted and shared with the public so the communities and suppliers can start preparing?” Nakimayak asked Transporation Minister Wally Schumann.

Schumann said while NTCL’s schedule was released closer to the date of actual shipping, he’s estimating a schedule could be set as early as April.

“The department is presently in the process of entering into a contract with a staffing contractor, to provide crews for the operations of tugs and barges this year, and we hope to have that in place by this week,” said Schumann, regarding staffing.

The GNWT bought NTCL’s barging assets on December 21, 2016. The company filed for bankruptcy protection last April after racking up nearly $140 million dollars in debt.
