Alcohol related offenses up in Behchoko

Government Office in Behchoko

Alcohol related offenses including impaired driving climbed during this year’s Tlicho assembly in Behchoko.

This year, the assembly did not have an alcohol prohibition, as Behchoko has lifted it’s ban on booze.

Behchoko Chief Clifford Daniels said he was “hoping that people would respect the gathering and not really interfere with [it].” But, there were problems.

5 people were charged during the week of the assembly. According to Stats Canada, on a standard week only 10 people are arrested for impaired driving across the entire NWT.

Residents have noticed more drinking during special events since the prohibition has been lifted.

Next year’s Annual Gathering will be in Whati, which has an alcohol ban in place.
