Race the Peel, a canoe race from Fort McPherson to Aklavik along the Peel River, will start June 28, 2017. The government of Canada decided to contribute $49 500 towards the event through its Canada 150 fund.

The Hamlet of Aklavik is organizing the event. Cultural games and activities will be held during a layover by the Aklavik Indian Band at the Knut Lang Camp.

The race will help recognize the importance of the Save the Peel campaign and highlight the work to save the porcupine caribou herd.
